“By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35)
María moved to Pamplona years ago. She’s around 40, has two sons and considers herself Roman Catholic. However, like most Spaniards, she puts little trust in the Church.
The people of Pamplona are friendly, but closed to new ideas and people. They have their families, customs and long- established circle of friends. María never really found good friends . . . until she met an unusual couple in her local coffee shop. They were “evangelicos” and would meet in their home with friends to study the Bible, pray and eat. She wasn’t too sure about their religion, but was intrigued to see how they all loved each other in the day-to-day. They practiced what they preached.
María still doesn’t attend their meetings. But she has gotten to know their Christian community, has coffee with its members, attends their kids’ birthday parties . . . and she’s impressed by what she sees.
We are praying for Maria. And we are not too concerned about the meetings. Biblically, evangelism doesn’t primarily happen in meetings, but in the day-to-day when Christians enter into the world and live the gospel in community.
